Hey there! So today I’m sharing with you my process for organizing my closet. Now, I’m sure you’ve seen other videos that have the fantabulous super well put together organization videos. I too, watched dozens of those videos and felt completely overwhelmed and underprepared for the picture perfect videos that I found. So, I shared what worked for me. A simple start. Its not quite Pinterest worthy but its functional AF and gives me much personal satisfaction.
For those of you who are readers and like the details, I’ll list them below.
STEP 1 : I purchased a bunch of baskets from the Dollar Store ($75 worth. Dont do that. I probably ended up only using about $15-20 for this project but the rest did come in handy in other projects). If I had to do it again, I would have purchased all of the bins in the same color to create some uniformity in the closet and give it a cleaner look. Also, check your house, you may already have items you can use for storage. If your feeling crafty, you can use shoeboxes and even reuse your pasta sauce jars and other random items for storage.
STEP 2: I cleaned and cleared my linen closet. This is a great time to toss old makeup, throw out crusty towels, etc. Because my attention span is limited, I took everything I was keeping into my living room so that I could do this next step with some ‘company’ (by company I mean watching several episodes of Law and Order: SVU)
STEP 3: I sorted all of the contents in piles. PRO TIP: Dont get stuck here! Depending on your organizational style, you can group in whatever way makes the most sense to you! I just do put thinks like “Lotion/ Razors/ Soaps” together and then I put all my “Eye/ Mouth/ Ear” stuff together. Based on the size of the piles I had for each item and how I used them, it made sense for me to group it this way. The beautiful thing is when you do the next step, you’ll discover it doesn’t really matter anyway
STEP 4: Match your storage container to your piles and then LABEL the heck out of them. Whether you’re a nerd like me and get a kick out of using a real labeler or you handwrite it on a sheet and tape it to the container, make sure you have enough info on the label so that you and who ever else will be utilizing the space knows what’s in the container. Lids off of containers works for me because I’m too lazy to take the cover off of stuff every time I need it. The container makes things look automatically neater so its ok if there are some items sticking out of the top. For smaller items like nail polish, q-tips, consider putting small containers inside of larger ones so your bigger containers don’t get too messy.
STEP 5: CELEBRATE YO’ SELF! If you got this far and you now have a functional, neat and useful closet, you are the bomb! Trust me, I get how much anxiety clutter and chaos can cause. Shoutout to you for taking a step towards creating space for your best self to show up!
Thanks for watching. If this was helpful, please make sure you SHARE!
